ETYMOLOGY 

The word “Rudraksha” literally means: ‘Rudra’ is the name of Shiva and ‘Aksh’ or ‘Aksha’ stands for tears. Therefore, literal meaning of Rudraksha is the tears of Shiva. The shiva is one of the trideva or trimurti (3 major gods), who are: Brahma “the creator”, Vishnu “the preserver” and Shiva “the destroyer”. 

ORIGIN OF RUDRAKSHA BEADS

A Rudraksha beads, or simply mala is a loop of prayer beads generally used in Indian religions such as Hinduism, Jainism, Sikhism, Buddhism for counting recitations when performing japa (mantra or other sacred sound) or for counting some other sadhana (spiritual practice) like prostrating before a holy icon. 

Rudraksha beads are similar to other forms of prayer beads which are used in various world religions & are sometimes known as ‘rosary’ in Christianity. 

According to the ancient Indian Scriptures, Shiva returned from a long meditation with a sense of compassion so strong that he cried. When his tears fell onto the earth, they turned into Rudraksha trees. 

They have been used for centuries by a range of religions from Hinduism, Buddhism to Catholicism. Today, these prayer beads are sometimes used as a mindfulness aid without any religious affiliation. 

WHAT ARE THEY MADE UP OF?   

The Rudraksha beads are made up of the seed of the tree Elaeocarpus ganitrus. It is a large evergreen tree which usually grows in a subtropical climate. And this tree is generally found in the foothills of the Himalayas, in the Gangetic plains, and the regions of Southeast Asia including Indonesia and Papua New Guinea. Rudraksha seeds are also known as blueberry seeds, since the outer husk of the seed is blue when fully ripe. 

The Rudraksha beads come in various sizes, Colours, shapes, and the number of cuts called mukhis, determine the value of the bead. Rudraksha beads range from 1 Mukhi to 21 Mukhi, each bead is capable of aligning your mind and the energy around you to specific outcomes in health, happiness, spiritual upliftment, prosperity, creativity, intuitive ability, material fulfilment, family harmony, attraction, self- empowerment and a fearless life.

The number of beads in Rudraksha beads is usually 108 plus one, in which Bindu is the additional bead. The Rudraksha Mala must always have a Bindu; else, the energy would become cyclical, making sensitive persons dizzy. An adult should wear a Rudraksha mala with more than 84 beads, plus the Bindu.
