Biden administration approves over $1.1 billion in arms sales to Taiwan

The administration on Friday formally notified Congress of the proposed sale, which includes up to 60 anti-ship missiles and up to 100 air-to-air missiles.

A State Department spokesman said the sale was in line with U.S. policy toward Taiwan, citing the long history of the U.S. providing defense weapons to Taiwan.

The “prompt delivery” of such weapons is “essential to Taiwan’s security, and we will continue to work with industry to support that goal,” they said.

“Pursuant to the Taiwan Relations Act, the United States is making available the necessary defense supplies and services to enable Taiwan to maintain adequate self-defense capabilities,” the spokesperson said, adding, “These proposed sales are , is a routine case to support Taiwan’s continued military operations.” Efforts to modernize the military and maintain a credible defensive capability. ”
