Venus Williams eliminated in US Open women’s singles first round

Williams, who qualified for the Open Era record 23rd U.S. Open, lost in the first round at New York’s Arthur Ashe Stadium, 6-1, 7-6 (5).

She and Serena will play their first doubles match on Wednesday or Thursday. It will be the first time since 2018 that the sisters, who have won 14 Grand Slam titles as partners, will play together in a tournament.

“It was without a doubt the longest period I’ve been away from tennis and without a racket in my hand,” she said, referring to the one-year gap between competitive matches that ended earlier this month. It was a whole new experience, I picked up my racket and tried to adapt as quickly as possible to prepare for the US Open, but it wasn’t easy.

“Definitely like playing a lot of great points, it’s just rust in the end.

At 42, she is the oldest player in this year’s draw and has made her 91st Grand Slam main draw, a tennis record.

Williams was also asked about her sister’s stay away from sports and whether Serena needed her support. “I think she does things the way she wants to, and that’s the most important thing: doing things her own way,” she said.

Williams did not disclose his plans for his long-term tennis future.

“I’m just focusing on doubles right now,” she said, adding with a smile that it was Serena’s idea.

World No. 43 van Uytvanck will face France’s Clara Brel in the second round. In their only previous match, Juan Uitbank won his 2021 Australian Open.

CNN’s Wayne Sterling contributed to this report.
