The Man Who Carved Pumpkins Down the Missouri River 38 Miles

(CNN) — A Nebraska man hopefully set a Guinness World Record by going 38 miles down the Missouri River on Saturday in a “boat” made out of hollowed-out pumpkins to celebrate his 60th birthday.

Hansen had asked city officials of the city of Bellevue to act as witnesses to the attempt to set the record.

A witness in the city said in a Facebook post, “If you keep working long enough, they say you can see just about everything. This morning was one of those days!”

The pumpkin hull had SS Berta’s name written on the back and a cup holder engraved into the hull.

According to the city’s post, Hansen’s wife, family and friends were also there to document the trip, and some followed Hansen in a suitable boat in case Pumpkin ran into trouble.

According to the Guinness World Records website, the previous record for longest journey by pumpkin boat was set in 2018 at 25.5 miles (41.038 km).

Guinness World Records spokesperson Kylie Galloway told CNN that the organization has accepted Hansen’s application and is awaiting evidence for review.

“Our application process provides applicants with guidelines specific to that record category that they must adhere to in order to be eligible. These guidelines also detail the evidence that must be submitted. Once received and reviewed, our record keeping team will: Confirm the success or failure of your record attempt,” Galloway said in an email.

Hansen lives in Syracuse, Nebraska and “enjoys growing large pumpkins, gourds and other vegetables as a hobby,” the city’s Facebook post said.
