3 dead, 2 seriously injured in car crash involving Indiana State University football players

The five passengers included several soccer players, the school said Sunday.

“While we await additional information from authorities investigating this incident, our hearts go out to the families and friends of the students involved,” said Deborah Curtis, president of the university, in a statement.

The accident happened just before 2:00 am in the small town of Riley, about 10 miles from the university campus in Terre Haute.

The vehicle was on fire by the time sheriffs arrived, according to the Vigo County Sheriff’s Office.

“Two of the occupants were released from the vehicle and taken to the hospital for treatment with serious injuries,” the sheriff’s office said. “Unfortunately, the driver and two other occupants were pronounced dead at the scene.”

The school has provided counseling services to students, faculty, and staff in the wake of the tragedy. It has also postponed the women’s soccer match scheduled for Sunday afternoon.
