Nine-year-old boy flees war-torn Cyprus to London

A family who fled Cyprus after the second Turkish invasion in August 1974 tells how they rebuild their lives after arriving in London as refugees.

When Baz Bedrossian was nine years old, he and his family had to leave their home in Nicosia, the capital of Cyprus, leaving all their belongings behind.

He remembers how he adapted to his new surroundings and had to learn a language he knew very little.

Cyprus has been divided since Turkey invaded the northern part of the island in response to a Greek government-backed military coup.

Despite efforts by the United Nations and the European Union over the past 50 years, it has not been resolved, making it Europe’s longest unresolved conflict.

It also means that generations have grown up knowing only the division of the island.
