HBO Max and Discovery+ will merge next year

The long-awaited merger of the two services will debut in the US next summer before rolling out abroad. warner bros discovery was announced on Thursday in its second-quarter earnings call.

The company did not say whether the new service will be named differently than HBO Max, nor has it announced pricing for the new service.

Warner Bros. Discovery added that it plans to reach 130 million global subscriptions for its streaming service by 2025.

The announcement that the two services will be merged is nothing new. Warner Bros. Discovery, which is also CNN’s parent company, has vowed to merge the two streaming services since Warner Bros. Discovery launched this spring.

However, it’s a notable move, given that the service is going to hit HBO’s scripted entertainment and Discovery+’s unscripted entertainment realms.

HBO, HBO Max and Discovery+ will have 92.1 million combined subscribers in Q2 2022, up 1.7 million from the previous quarter, according to the company.

The company said it will announce more information about the service at an investor event due before the end of the year.

The company reported second quarter results of $9.8 billion in revenue and a significant loss of $3.42 billion. The company’s shares fell about 12% in after-hours trading.
