Primary voters will join Rep. Jaime Herrera Butler and Dan New, two of the 10 House Republicans who have joined Democrats to impeach Trump after the Jan. 6, 2021 attack on the U.S. Capitol. Ad spend for Newhouse is fairly low, with the Defending Main Street Super PAC, a group that spent just under $500,000 on ads for his own campaigns and aired over $800,000 in ads supporting and emphasizing Republican incumbents. Yakima County Republican Commissioner Debra Manjares said that if Newhouse had voted against impeachment, there would “never” be a competitive primary, and since 2015, 11 Republicans have been elected. He said he would have “won 60% of the vote” in May.

But as day one approaches, some of the same people who were poised to oust Newhouse aren’t as excited about impeachment as they used to be.
“Just last week there were some people in Culp who had no farming experience at all, so how could he help us with A, B and C?” Levine recalls. “[Sentiment]is running high, and now that voters need to check the boxes on their ballot, it’s a little harder for them to make a clearer choice because they want more than an impeachment vote. Because we take it into consideration.”
