Miami-Dade County Board of Education again reverses decision on health and sex education textbooks

The board voted Thursday 5-4 to revive middle and high school textbooks covering several topics, including pregnancy prevention, understanding sexuality and sexually transmitted diseases, according to the book’s description.

Convened by Chairman Perla Tavares Huntman special meeting and asked for a re-vote. She switched from voting against her to voting for her last week.

“We need to make sure our district complies with state standards and curriculum requirements,” she said.

Florida School Board Rejects New Sex Education Textbook

Trustee Lubby Navarro voted against approving the textbook. She said the public had not been given sufficient notice that the issue was being raised again.

“Last week’s decision is still wet,” Navarro said.

Some parents said the materials violated state custody laws. The law, which bans certain teachings about sexual orientation and gender identity in classrooms, has been dubbed by opponents as a “don’t say gay” law.
