Mystic Aquarium to keep animals cool

Mystic, Connecticut (WFSB)-The hot summer has forced many of us to find different ways to cool down.

But what about our sea friends in the aquarium?

Witness news looked inside to see how the animals in the Mystic Aquarium were chilling.

Animals are doing the same things that humans are doing now.

They drink a lot of water and sometimes eat ice.

Especially if you are a beluga, it’s all fun and games in the aquarium.

“I like beluga whales keeping their faces dirty on the glass, and they were cute,” said Ashna Gupta.

Ashna is chilling with the whale. It’s been about seven years since she stopped by the aquarium.

“She was like one when we first visited. Now that she’s eight, we wanted to revisit our memories,” said Deepty Gupta.

A colony of 33 African penguins is in the sun.

“The big misconception about penguins is that they live on ice and snow, but our penguins prefer the summer season, and a nice hot day like that day is good for them. It’s the climate, “said Tracy Camp, the overseer of African penguins.

All eyes are looking at these endangered penguins.

They know what to do if it’s too hot for them. Hiding in the shade, hanging out by sprinklers, “but like everyone else, if you really need to cool down, take a refreshing swim in the pool,” Camp said.

Seals are also hydrated non-stop near exhibits on the Arctic coast and the Pacific Northwest.

“The water is always kept at a stable 55 degrees, so it’s actually the coolest in the water,” said Mairim Martinez, habitat supervisor on the Arctic and Pacific Northwest.

Furs, harbors, and harbor seals also have hoses to play with. Or munching on the ice that is constantly being added.

“They always have access to shelters. They can go where we have fans and we can keep them a little cool. But they are with all their friends. I like to exhibit, “Martinez said. “So you will notice that there is a pool with ice water where they can jump off.”

Regardless of the weather, the mystic team monitors the animals to make sure they are cold in this heat wave.

If you want to be cool with your penguins, you can enter for free until September 5th.
