The official certificate to Brutin Beach was recorded and handed over to the legitimate owner

The great-grandchildren of the former land owners Willa and Charles Bruce were presented by the LA County Registration Recorder with an official certificate showing the transfer of the land.

Anthony Bruce smiled and held the document overhead as the crowd cheered and the waves of the sea slammed into the background.

This event is the final step in returning Bruce’s Beach from Los Angeles County to the hands of family heirs.

Senator Steven Bradford, author of the state bill that allowed Bruce’s heirs to receive property, said: ..

last monthThe Los Angeles County Supervisory Board unanimously resolved to return the land to the family.

Known as Bruce’s Beach, the resort provided a place for black families to enjoy life in California and was a loving job for couples. They bought land for $ 1,225 in 1912 and built several facilities such as cafes and changing rooms.

But harassment from white neighbors and the Ku Klux Klan tore their dreams.

The final blow occurred in 1924 when the city acquired real estate through land expropriation and paid the couple a portion of the amount they requested. The city wanted land for the park.

The property is currently estimated to be worth $ 20 million and was transferred to Los Angeles County in 1995. The houses right next to the property each have a price tag of about $ 7 million.

Last year, Governor Gavin Newsom signed a law that would allow the county to return seaside property to its descendants.

“This has never happened before,” Los Angeles County coach Janice Hahn said on Wednesday. “We can’t change the past and can’t make up for the injustices that took place in your great-grandparents, great-grandparents, Willa and Charles almost a century ago. But this is the beginning.”
