Killed for blasphemy in Nigeria: “I felt like a spear pierced my heart.”

Deborah Samuel was a 21-year-old Christian student attending a university in northern Nigeria.

A crowd of classmates beat her to death after accusing her of blaspheming the voice memo she shared on WhatsApp.

Her mother and father told the BBC that their lives have changed dramatically since she was killed.

Blasphemy has long been controversial in Nigeria.

Although Nigerian law is not based on any religion, the 12 states in the north of the majority of Muslims have Islamic courts that consider blasphemy a crime punished by death.

However, the death sentence for blasphemy has never been sentenced. Instead, blasphemous claims often lead to the killing of mobs.
