Simulations show that a 42-foot tsunami could hit Seattle in minutes if a major earthquake hits the Seattle Fault.

Scientists have discovered that if a magnitude 7.5 earthquake occurs on the Seattle Fault, a tsunami over 40 feet high can reach the Seattle area within three minutes.

According to a news release, “tsunami inundation and strong tides can last for more than three hours after an earthquake.”

This study shows that coastline floods and coastline changes occur throughout the Seattle area after such a powerful earthquake.

The last known earthquake at the Seattle Fault occurred about 1100 years ago, the news release said.

The study was conducted to help local and state emergency managers and planners develop and improve tsunami response and readiness plans in Washington’s largest densely populated and economic centers. It was done, “said the news release.
