Walker, 25, was killed on June 27 after escaping what police said was an attempt to stop traffic. Officials said it was over after he stopped immediately and police believed he had reached out to his waist and moved to the “firing position.”
Akron police, the city, and the police union have not responded to CNN’s repeated requests for comment on the practice of detaining suspects after being shot by police.
In an interview with WEWS, Millet said the suspect needed to be handcuffed because it could continue to pose a threat after all the shootings involving police officers.
“If this is my brother, if this is my son, if this is my grandson, I don’t want it,” said the chief. “I understand that, I really do, and I’m going to discuss that need with others.”
Mr Millet said detention remained to protect the crime scene.
The final autopsy report will be submitted to the Ohio Criminal Investigation Bureau (BCI). This investigation office is investigating criminal acts by police officers. The autopsy report is part of what the State Attorney’s Office will consider in order to file a proceeding with a grand jury.
City announces daily press conference
On Friday, Mayor Akron Announced from Monday. He and the police chief will host a daily press briefing to “provide timely and consistent safety information and quickly disseminate information to both the general public and the press.”
“We know that Akron’s situation is constantly evolving and our community needs to get the latest information as soon as possible,” the mayor said in a statement. “Our new dedicated site and these daily briefings will help us better promise transparency and help our inhabitants understand exactly what is happening.”
In a video on Friday, the mayor said, “I know there were many peaceful protests last week and I fully support them. It is my duty to support the right to hear the voice of the public.” Said. “But what I can’t forgive is the type of violence and lawlessness seen in some of these late-night protests.”
“Violent protests are not allowed to come to my house and threaten me and my family,” he added, adding that he was committed to transparency, community dialogue and involvement.
“Without the truth, healing is impossible, so we must allow this independent investigation to carry out that course,” Holigan said.
