So what’s next? Do the conservative populism they advocate last longer than their tenure? Or does their fall from power mark the beginning of a new era in conservative politics?
Our moments are somewhat similar to the end of the 1980s, when two of the most influential figures of conservatism, US President Ronald Reagan and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher, ended their terms. For Reagan, that moment happened after the end of the second phase of 1989, and Thatcher resigned in 1990. Both numbers were so influential that they pushed up conservative brands that privileged market virtues and blasted the role of government. He attacked organized workers and insisted on a hawkish approach to foreign policy. Together, Reagan and Thatcher have reshaped international politics by bringing legitimacy to a political vision that would have been considered too radical in just a few decades before they took the lead.
But their conservative brand never disappeared. Republicans and Conservatives simply absorb the basic principles supported by these figures, and their economic policy heritage, including deregulation advantages, remains appropriate.
What will happen today? The same is most likely. Both Trump and Johnson have caused significant changes in their party, which will be difficult to undo. In the United States, Trump’s political future remains uncertain, but many other Republicans are moving forward to promote what could be called trumpism-those who say it’s republicanism in 2022. There is also-in a more sophisticated and politically viable way. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis is a prime example. In other words, the Trump White House agenda will not disappear. The only question is whether others will replace Trump as the voice of those policies.
A similar scenario will be seen in the UK after Johnson’s resignation. History has shown that it is not easy to undo major changes such as Brexit and the Supreme Court coalition of Trump. And while new leaders from opposition often come to power, they cannot easily recreate the existing political situation.
One notable difference is that in the UK, the Conservatives still seem to have their limits, even if they are based on pure political calculations. In the end, the party realized that Johnson was overkill and that he shouldn’t be in command.
It’s hard to imagine that similar party rebellions could have occurred within the Republican Party during the Trump administration. Instead, the Republicans have moved to a place that is off limits and appears to have no guardrails. See the amazing number of Republicans who simply doubled Trump’s election denialism, shouted his support, and confused his key position.
Johnson and Trump may have disappeared from the political stage, but their legacy will continue. Their form of conservatism will hold each party deeply and will continue to influence politics in the future.
