Fire destroys Salisbury’s historic African-American church – WSOC TV

Salisbury, NC — A fire destroyed the historic church in Salisbury, once one of the oldest African-American churches in the region.

The fire began shortly before midnight on Wednesday night at the Second Creek Methodist Church on Gain Road. The crew said that when they got there, almost three-quarters of the building was already on fire.

“Now we went home-to-house, interviewed and surveyed the area. We’ll start with the actual structure in the morning,” said Rowan County Fire Marshal Deborah Horn.

Mr. Horn said he would be back to continue the investigation when sunrise came on Thursday.

Marshal Fire added that the church was built in the 1800s and has not been worshiped for more than 50 years.
