The resolution was unanimously passed on May 17 as part of the county’s consensus agenda. “No one in the council caught it because the resolution only said’pride month’,” council member Johnny Vort told CNN in an email.
Vaught said the council began to receive backlash from the community after it passed the resolution.

The county council secretary, Pat Hartley, said the local LGBTQ + advocate, Grand Strand PRIDE, sent an email requesting a resolution on the May agenda.
Items such as proclamation and resolutions are usually considered indisputable and, according to Hartley, the council needs to vote only once. Council Chair Johnny Gardner added that she has the sole authority to remove items before approving the proceedings.
CNN tried to contact Gardner for comment, but he didn’t respond.
