Gujarat: How Doctors Save Lions from Blindness

A 5-year-old lion in Gujarat, western India, is recovering his eyesight after a doctor has performed cataract surgery on both eyes.

Gir Forest officials, the last residence of Asian lions, first noticed something was wrong when the lions stopped responding even when their prey was nearby. Then they took him to a rescue center, where examinations showed that he had mature cataracts in both eyes.

In cataract surgery, the natural lens of the eye is replaced with a plastic one. They are routinely done for small animals such as dogs.

To prepare for Lion’s surgery, doctors read research papers and spoke to experts. They also studied eye samples obtained after the death of a dead lion to understand the anatomy.

The lion is currently recovering from surgery and will soon be returned to the forest.
