Federal Court Blocks Louisiana Parliament Map

If the ruling is upheld, Democrats are likely to win additional seats in the US House of Representatives.

The currently blocked map passed in March after a Republican-controlled parliament overturned Democratic Governor John Bel Edwards’ veto on the map. The map maintains Republican dominance in five of the state’s six parliamentary districts, maintains a second district extending from Baton Rouge to New Orleans, is the only black district, and supports the Democratic Party. It was the only district.

A court order will extend the time for candidates to collect signatures to qualify for the state’s November public parliamentary primary, but enough for the state to draw a new line before this year’s elections. Legal issues may continue as to whether or not there is time. Louisiana officials have already told the court that they will appeal the ruling.

In her decision, Judge Sherry Dick wrote that the timing issue in the Alabama case was “distinguishable” from the situation in Louisiana.

Louisiana is currently the only state without a map of the 2022 election cycle.
