Four former members of the New York City Fire Department died of a 9.11-related illness within four days, FDNY says.

“To date, 287 FDNY members have died from illnesses related to the World Trade Center, including four retired firefighters last week alone,” FDNY said in a press release.

“These tragic losses are reminiscent of the FDNY’s ongoing sacrifices and the extraordinary courage shown by members of the Bureau on September 11 and subsequent rescue and recovery efforts.” Said.

Former FDNY members Michael Verge, Robert Reynolds, Vincent Mandala, and Jack McCawley all died at the end of May, FDNY said.

Union officials said at a news conference that such services are likely to continue, as death is difficult in the FDNY community and long-term illness affects first responders.
