Teenager Holger Rune stuns fourth-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas at the French Open

With the victory, Rune, ranked 40th in the world, will be the first Danes to reach the quarterfinals at Roland Garros against Norwegian Casper Ruud.

According to the ATP Tour, the 19-year-old former Junior French Open Champion is also the first man to advance to the quarterfinals of the Grand Slam tournament from Denmark since Janleschry in 1967.

“I feel incredible now,” Rune said in an interview on the court after the match on Monday. “I was very nervous at the end, but the audience was great throughout the match and the tournament.”

He won the first set close to last year’s finalist Tsitsipas in just over an hour before the Greeks leveled the match thanks to the interruption of the serve in the second 4-3.

The runes broke in the middle of the third set to regain their advantage and took the 5-2 lead in the fourth set to conclude the victory.

Runes and Tsitsipas will meet online following the French Open quarterfinals.

Rune, alongside Spain’s Carlos Alcalas, is the second teenager to play in the last eight men’s singles games at this year’s French Open, with two men’s teenagers in the major quarterfinals since 1994. It is the first time to reach.

Rune, who defeated Alexander Zverev at the Munich Open in April, won his first victory over the top five players.

After defeating 23-year-old Poland’s Hubert Hurkacz 6-2 6-3 3-6 6-3, he will face Ludo on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Tsitsipas will be the highest ranked player and the first player to be in the top eight in the world to finish the men’s draw at this year’s French Open.
