Mark McKinnon, a spokesman for law enforcement at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources, said the two boats were heading in the opposite direction when they crashed.

According to McKinnon, one of the two boats carried six passengers and the second one carried three. The other four involved in the crash were slightly injured and taken to a hospital near Savannah.

“The identities of the people involved have been withheld until the family is notified,” a spokesman said.

Savannah is about three and a half hours drive from Atlanta.

Authorities are currently looking for sector scan sonar, McKinnon said. This is a device typically used to navigate the vehicle and avoid obstacles. Two US Coast Guard helicopters are also cooperating in the search, McKinnon said.
