The Queen begins her final journey as a coffin transported from Balmoral Castle to the Scottish capital

The Queen’s coffin was placed in Balmoral Castle’s ballroom, where estate staff could pay her final respects, a palace official said.

At 10:00 am local time (5:00 am ET), the coffin left Balmoral for the six-hour journey through Scotland to the official Scottish residence of the British Royal Family.

It will pass through the village of Ballater and the cities of Aberdeen and Dundee before descending Edinburgh’s Royal Mile.

The coffin arrives in the forecourt of the Palace of Holyroodhouse and is enshrined in the throne room. Regional declarations are made at Cardiff Castle in Wales, Hillsborough Castle in Northern Ireland and Edinburgh Castle.

On Monday, the coffin will be carried in procession from the palace to St Giles’ Cathedral, where it will rest until Tuesday.

The coffin is then moved from Edinburgh to Buckingham Palace in London.

On Wednesday, the coffin will again be moved from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall, ending the morning of the state funeral.

The Queen’s recumbent ends on the morning of September 19, a national holiday in Great Britain. Her coffin is then moved in procession again to Westminster Abbey for her state funeral.

After the funeral, the coffin is again carried in procession from Westminster Abbey to Wellington Arch. From there, travel to Windsor. Upon arrival in Windsor, the hearse travels to St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle for a devotional service.
