Suspect charged with two counts of murder in murder of two Georgia sheriff’s deputies shot while serving arrest warrant

The men, Christopher Golden and Christopher Cook, made their first appearances at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center on Friday and were charged. Neither has yet been assigned a lawyer.

Golden was charged with two counts of aggravated assault and two counts of murder of a police officer in connection with the fatal shootings of Rep. Marshall Ervin Jr. and Jonathan Choleski.

At a press conference on Friday, Van Hooser said the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office is looking to serve an arrest warrant on Thursday at Marietta’s residence. Marietta is about 30 minutes northwest of Atlanta.

While serving the warrant, two deputies attempted to detain Cook in the driveway.

“While they were doing so, they were confronted with an individual with a weapon in the house,” Van Hooser said. But he didn’t, said the chief.

“At that point, a shootout ensued between the subject and the agent. Both agents were shot and both agents died from injuries.”

VanHoozer identified Golden as the armed individual at the house who shot the deputies. Authorities said both Golden and Cook turned themselves in to police after a “brief standoff” in the house.

“Last night was a horrible night for us here in Cobb County,” Sheriff Owens said at a news conference. “We lost two great legislators.”

According to Owens, Irvin, 38, was married with two children, and Choleski, 42, was also married. Irvin joined the Sheriff’s Department in 2012 and Choleski in 2007. Said on Twitter.

They were “outstanding men, men of character and integrity” who were loved by their families and children, the sheriff added.

VanHoozer said the investigation is still in its early stages, with investigators examining body camera video, testimony evidence, and physical evidence.
