Mystery of stray voltages keeping New Jersey families out of pools and lawns

Brick, New Jersey (WABC) — A New Jersey family worries for their safety after a mysterious stray voltage detected in their backyard ruins their summer fun.

James and Colleen Volk have been cautiously roaming the lawn lately as the quiet oasis hides a shocking mystery.

They say they have been victims of stray voltages since they installed their above ground pool earlier this summer.

“My wife, mother-in-law and daughter were at the pool and my wife went to clean out the skimmer basket,” said James Volk. I felt tingling and numbness all the way down to my legs.”

Volks had the power company and an independent electrician check the pool and its surroundings, and tried everything, but the mystery still remains.

“This is the part that was missing originally, the green wire,” says James Volk. “We installed it and still had issues. We put a ground rod in there and it was still having issues. We replaced the entire bonding ring and still had issues.” I did.”

They’ve made all the major and minor fixes recommended by the experts, but Volks is still out of the pool.

“It’s horrible,” said James Volk. “I have a two-year-old and she is my first child. I have a wife here. I have a mother-in-law here. We are afraid to leave the house and enter the house.” Lawn.”

His mother-in-law also said that she stood on the front lawn one day and was shocked.

“From her legs to her hips, she felt something like my wife,” he said. “She was almost vibrating.”

City officials say they are fully aware of Volk’s voltage issues and are taking steps to keep their families safe.

“If they do all the testing and it’s not coming from either the pool or the work, it’s going to be a stray voltage in the ground,” Brick Mayor John Ducey said.

Utility company JCP&L said they are investigating.

“Reports of stray voltage are a safety issue and will be thoroughly investigated immediately,” said spokesperson Chris Honig.
