Teen Chiefs fan who battled diabetes for years was stunned by ‘away game experience’

BLUE SPRINGS, MO (KCTV) – Was it just dinner, he thought. Instead, 15-year-old Carson Lundquist heads his game away to the Chiefs of his choice!

The Lundquist family turned up at Hy-Vee in Blue Springs Wednesday night to give away a free dinner. The next thing they knew, a TV camera showed up and some of his Hy-vee managers showed up at their table.

“Dinner wasn’t the only reason I brought you here tonight,” said manager Chris Wilthofon.

“You also played an away game with the Kansas City Chiefs. How was that?”

how about that? Along with the announcement, Carson was handed a basket containing Chiefs gear.

“I was so surprised. I thought I was just coming to eat, but I think I got everything,” Carson said. I always wanted to go to the away game that was supposed to be there.”

This is the ultimate prize. All the more so considering Carson’s life has never been easier.

“This healthy boy was born, but suddenly he was admitted to Children’s Mercy’s ICU,” said his mother, Alison Landquist.

At just three years old, Carson was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes.

“It’s a 24/7 illness. We don’t take vacations. We’re constantly monitoring his blood sugar and trying to keep him healthy,” Allison said.

“Every time you eat something, you have to take insulin,” Carson said.

For most of Carson’s life, the family has relied on the support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. JDRF is dedicated to research and discovery of treatments for type 1 diabetes.

In return, Carson and his family gave back to JDRF. That’s why JDRF partnered with Hy-Vee for Carson’s Big He Surprise.

“JDRF has been a great partner with Hy-Vee for decades, so this was a good moment,” said Wiltofon.

about which games Carson will go to.

“Bills or Rams game,” said Carson.

“I’m thinking somewhere warm and sunny,” Alison said with a laugh.

Carson also has to decide which family will go with him. He got two tickets to his Chiefs game, one night in a hotel, and a round-trip air ticket.
