The Queen continued to perform a wide range of public duties well into her 90s.

However, she has been forced to significantly reduce her diary this year as she struggles with mobility issues.

Monarch has suffered several episodes related to her health in recent years.

  • December 2003: The Queen underwent surgery to remove the torn cartilage in her left knee. It followed a similar operation on her right knee earlier that same year.
  • March 2013: The monarch was hospitalized to be treated for gastroenteritis, a common stomach bug.
  • May 2021: She was unable to attend a memorial Sunday service in central London after spraining her back.
  • October 2021: The Queen spent the night in hospital while undergoing a “preliminary investigation,” the palace said at the time.
  • February 2022: The Queen contracted Covid-19 and suffered mild flu-like symptoms, but continued to perform light duties.

Since her Covid-19 diagnosis, the Queen has been forced to cancel or scale back some events more regularly.

She did not attend all of June’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations (which marks her 70th anniversary on the throne), and she was unable to attend the state legislative opening the previous month due to her mobility impairment.
