Typhoon Hinnamnor left the Korean peninsula early Tuesday morning after lashing the southeastern industrial cities of Pohang, Gyeongju and Ulsan with strong winds and heavy rain.
It was heading northeast over the Sea of Japan and was expected to pass the city of Sapporo in northeastern Japan around 9 p.m. local time, according to the Korea Meteorological Agency.

In the South Korean city of Pohang, one resident died after being swept away by strong ocean currents, and eight others were reported missing in a submerged underground parking garage, according to South Korea’s interior ministry.
Local broadcaster YTN showed footage of a wrecked car being pulled out of a basement apartment garage with muddy water blocking the entrance.
Another person died after being buried in a house that was hit by a landslide in Gyeongju, and one person was reported missing in Ulsan as of Tuesday afternoon.
Casualties are likely to rise as the military mobilizes amphibious vehicles and rescue efforts continue.
About 2,900 people were displaced, mostly in the south, and more than 66,000 households were without power, with 45% of services restored as of 3pm local time.
The typhoon has forced hundreds of flights to be canceled, businesses to shut down and schools to close.
POSCO reported that by-product gas was temporarily released at its Pohang plant due to a power outage caused by the typhoon.
Ulsan-based shipbuilder Hyundai Heavy Industries said part of its factory was submerged, but there were no major losses. Some of the ships have been sent to the West Coast to prevent damage and will return Thursday.
A spokeswoman for Daewoo Shipbuilding & Marine Engineering said the company’s shipyard in nearby Changwon had no incidents so far and stopped production on Tuesday morning as planned.
South Korea has repeatedly asked North Korea to notify it, as releasing water from the dam could cause flooding downstream, but North Korea has remained unresponsive.
