Dangerous waves expected along Lake Michigan shore starting Saturday afternoon

Chicago (CBS) — Hazardous waves and currents are expected on Lake Michigan this Labor Day weekend.

The situation warranted a beach hazard statement from the National Weather Service. This will take effect Saturday afternoon and will remain in effect until Sunday afternoon.

Swimming is expected to be dangerous Saturday afternoon behind a cold front.

Expect waves up to 6 feet and dangerous currents on Lake Michigan beaches. The National Weather Service warns that this means swimming conditions are life-threatening, especially for inexperienced swimmers.

This warning applies to all beaches along the western shore of Lake Michigan. It applies not only to Cook and Lake counties, and northwestern Indiana in the Chicago area, but also to all beaches along the lakeshores of Wisconsin to Door County.

The warning is also in effect in northern Michigan and some lakeside counties in the Upper Peninsula.

Swimmers are advised to stay out of the water and to stay off piers, piers, breakwaters or other shoreline structures.
