Woman attacked by alligator in Bradenton

BRADENTON, Fla. (WWSB) – A 77-year-old woman was attacked by an alligator Saturday night. A call was received at approximately 6:00 pm and was answered by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, and the Manatee County EMS.

The FWC reported that the woman was taken to hospital to be treated for her injuries. The extent of her injuries is still unknown. The incident occurred in the gated community at 16832 Ellsworth Street. A report from the FWC said nasty alligator trappers were sent to the scene to remove the 7-foot-10 alligator. The FWC reported no other alligators were found in the area.

According to Justin Matthews, owner of Matthews Wildlife Rescue, alligators typically measure around 300 pounds and have large jaw strength. He said the woman was lucky to be alive and that the incident was most likely caused by someone feeding the alligator.

“A way to determine if an alligator has been fed by a person is to see an alligator in a pond while walking, move your arms in a throwing motion, and if the alligator starts moving toward you, go to Florida. It’s time to call the Wildlife Commission,” Matthews said.

Most of the time, crocodiles don’t pay attention to people passing by unless they’re being fed, Matthews says.

The FWC says it believes the alligator responsible for the attack has been exterminated, according to the report.
