CT reports first human case of West Nile virus this season

(WFSB) – State health officials reported the first human case of West Nile virus in Connecticut this year.

Public Health said a man in New Haven County has contracted the virus. He’s between he’s 70 and he’s 79.

Officials said the man was hospitalized in the first week of August.

Health officials said the man was discharged last week. He is recovering in a rehab facility.

So far this season, West Nile virus-infected mosquitoes have been detected in 23 Connecticut towns, including Hartford, Meriden and Westhaven.

“My daughter is allergic to mosquito bites, so I have to get her in full clothing as often as possible,” said Clinton resident Wendy Andrade.

Mosquito bites are too painful, so Wendy constantly checks on her daughter Destiny.

“It gets pretty big around the mosquito bite and it swells up a lot. Rehberg said.

Destiny says that covering the body is very helpful in avoiding potential infections like the West Nile.

Most people who get the virus do not develop symptoms.

About 1 in 5 people can have problems such as fever and body aches.

About 1 in 10 people with serious illness will die.

“It can happen to anyone. There are many viruses that you can get from ticks, but you can get it just by using bug spray. That will help,” Destiny said.

Repellent is a great tool.

Health officials also say to minimize outdoor activities at dusk and dawn and wear shoes, socks and long sleeves.

These tips will help keep you safe until the mosquito situation calms down.

Authorities make sure your backyard is clear of standing water and that your swimming pool is cleaned.
