A Denver woman climbing Capitol Peak, one of Colorado’s most difficult mountains, has died after falling 900 feet, the sheriff’s office said.

A Denver woman who climbed Colorado’s most dangerous mountain fell to her death Saturday from a height of 900 feet. Mountain, according to a news release from the Pitkin County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities received a call from a man before 8 a.m. Saturday, saying he and a hiking party saw a woman hiking alone on Capital Peak, about 14 miles west of Aspen. It is said that the rock that was on the ground collapsed and fell.

When notified, the sheriff’s office contacted Mountain Rescue Aspen. Witnesses were able to provide rescuers with the exact location of the woman’s body, the release said.

“The woman then fell approximately 900 feet, presumed to have fallen from a route connecting Knife Edge and the summit of Capitol Peak to the Pierre Lakes Basin,” the release said.

A woman’s body was found and transferred to the Pitkin County coroner. Authorities are trying to contact her next of kin before revealing the woman’s identity.

Capitol Peak has an elevation of about 14,137 feet and is located in the Maroon Bells Snowmass Wilderness Area. “With extreme exposure and loose, crumbling rock, he is considered one of the most difficult mountains to climb in Colorado,” the release states.
