India’s Water Crisis: Why Millions of People in India Still Have No Access to Tap Water

For millions of Indians, access to clean water is still a distant dream. People living in rural areas travel miles on foot over harsh terrain to collect water from sources that are not always clean.

In 2019, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the Jal Jeevan (Water is Life) mission with the goal of bringing tap water to every household in India by 2024. Millions of households have benefited from this program.

With only two years left until the deadline, millions of people are waiting for clean tap water.

The BBC’s Divya Arya traveled across the country to see the program’s successes and remaining challenges.
